Last Saturday Paddock Wood AC travelled to Sutcliffe Park for the last in the Southern Athletics League matches. With practically all the younger members of the team on holiday and three older members injured, it was down to four masters’ athletes to cover as many events as possible. In the ladies W35 Elizabeth Duffin won the Javelin 22.38m, she came 2nd in the hammer 24.07m a season’s best. She also did the shot and discus. W50 Nikki Whiffen competing in the league for the first time, came 1 st B string in the hammer 19.39m, a really good result for Nikki who usually throws a lighter 3Kg implement. Again in the javelin she came 2 nd 15.47m with a heavier weight. Nikki joined Elizabeth in the shot and discus. M55 Mark Woods and M60 David Perman covered the men’s throws, with both throwing a heavier weight than normal. Mark won the Javelin with 23.94m with David claiming 2 nd place in the B string. In the hammer Mark was 2 nd 19.69m and David 1 st B 14.22m. Both covered the shot and David the discus. They were joined by some members of Folkestone RC who covered some of the longer distance races. The combined team came 3 rd on the day.
The following Monday Charlotte Whiffin competed in the Blackheath and Bromley Harriers AC Open Meeting. Her first throw started with a PB of 36.67m, setting a new club record for an U15W. Her 5 th was 36.73m another PB and new club record. Her final throw of the series was 38.55m some 3m more than her best before the day.
