Round Norfolk Relay 2016

I would like to thank everyone involved in helping and running in the RNR this year. The team this year covered a distance of 197.93 miles, over17 legs in 23 hours, 40 minutes and 30 seconds- (7.11 minute miling). We finished 4th in the prestigious club category class and 10th overall out of 59 teams- a great team performance. We entered the Club class category which requires at least 5 women and a minimum of 6 veterans; this is a true reflection of the clubs strengths.

This was our 17th year at the event and as usual is a really good team building weekend. As well as the 17 runners, the team was supported by Mike Ridger, David Sampson and Paul Mace without their help it would be impossible to complete the race, so thank you!

Individual performances and results will be shown in the results section and are also shown on the RNR website- www.roundnorfolkrelay.com

I don’t like highlighting individual performances as this really is a team race but it’s worth mentioning Claire Day, Sarah Shepheard and Maria Heslop who were the quickest female runners on their individual legs.

Maria also won the highest age graded performance for her run on stage 11. We also as a club won the best time estimate. We were only 28 seconds outside our prediction after nearly 24 hours of running.

Next years race is on the 16-17th September 2017 so keep training hard and thank you everyone again!

RNR – A view from the minibus – and the saddle

“Eye of the tiger!”… “Absolutely brilliant!”… “Go on Rocky, you are an animal!”

It’s 3am and I’m on a bike riding alongside Colin Tricker, who is running a 19 mile leg along an almost deserted, but far from quiet road on the Norfolk / Suffolk border, writes Mike Walter. Ahead are a series of flashing orange beacons attached to minibuses following runners from rival teams. Behind us is a support vehicle driven by Pete Buckingham sitting alongside enthusiastic passenger Nick Brown, who is leaning out of the window.

The shouts for Colin come thick and fast and become louder and more bizarre each time he overtakes a competitor. I lost count how many runners we caught; it was certainly at least 14, could have been 15, maybe 16.

Colin’s eyes remained fixed on the road ahead and he kept an impressive pace throughout his run. His performance was due mainly to determination and months of training… but may have been helped in a small way by the support received en-route.

Throughout the 22 hours plus of PWAC’s participation in the Round Norfolk Relay a small but dedicated (and sleep deprived) band of runners and supporters stayed out on the road the whole way round the county to cheer on our team. Runners were grateful for the support and those doing the shouting were happy to be part of a magical event.

Many of us had woken before sunrise on the Saturday to get up to King’s Lynn for the start of our race at 10am – and we were still awake as sunrise broke on the Sunday. As Rob Rowland crossed the finishing line to bring the team home, the prize many of us were hoping for was a comfortable bed.

* Overall the weekend was great fun, but there was sad news which overshadowed this year’s race. A runner from City of Norwich AC collapsed and died towards the end of stage four. Our thoughts are with the runner’s family and his club.

Round Norfolk Relay 2014

Round Norfolk Relay 2014

Many congratulations to PWAC’s Round Norfolk Relay team which came second in the prestigious Club category and seventh overall out of 51 teams.

We finished the 196 mile, 17 stage course in 22 hours 35 minutes and 3 seconds; an average pace of 6 minutes 54 seconds a mile.

Special mention goes to Claire Day who won her 7.9 mile stage in 54 minutes and 7 seconds and to Paul Hasler who completed his tenth RNR and picks up a commemorative medal.

Thanks also to the support crew without whose help the club’s participation would not have been possible: timekeeper Mike Ridger, mini bus drivers and cyclists Rob Weighell, Richard Bidois (and myself!) and support vehicle driver Steve Roberts, who also supplied the team’s two bicycles.

Some of the runners dug deep to provide extra support to the team; so thanks also to Steve Chivers for helping drive the minibus, to Joseph Holland for cycling some of the later stages and to Nick Brown and Pete Buckingham for their (vocal) support while following runners in a support vehicle through the night.

And we mustn’t forget a huge thank you is owed to James Ridger who organised the team and decided who needed to be where and when… only to miss the event to watch an F1 race in Singapore.

The PWAC runners this year were:

Stage 1: Nick Brown (16.81 miles, 2 hours 8 minutes 25 seconds);
