Six Paddock Wood athletes competed in the European Masters Non-Stadia Championships in Grosseto, Italy, with four medal successes.
Sue James was eleventh over-60 in the women’s 10k road race in 52min 31sec and with Alison White (12th, 52:58) helped GB to team bronze. The following day, the same two athletes competed in the 3x2k cross country relay (30:26) and improved to W60 team silver behind Italy.
Alan Newman (17th, 42:39) and Des White (25th, 46:15) ran in the M60 10k and cross country relay. The British M60 team finished fourth in both races with Alan anchoring GB M60 in the 3x2k (22:08) and Des running lead leg for GB M60 ‘B’ (25:05). There were no individual split times in the relay so the times shown are for approximately 6k as a team of three. There was also a half marathon on offer on the Sunday but with temperatures in excess of 30C and insufficient training preparation our runners settled for spectating and a few well earned beers.
Race walkers Malcolm and Angela Martin were in action in the gruelling heat and windy conditions. Malcolm contested the M60 10k (7th, 58:22) and 30k (4th, 3:07:53) with a GB team position of fifth in the shorter event. Angela competed in the W50 10k (9th, 1:06:00) and 20k (5th, 2:22:44) without any team interest and neither athlete received any technical warnings despite difficult conditions for race-walking.
Grosseto is in the heart of the Tuscany region of Italy and although the event was overshadowed by the Giro d’Italia cycle race coming through there was some good competition as GB Masters finished fourth on the medal table behind hosts Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
