Last weekend at the Kent County Championships just 4 athletes competed for Paddock Wood AC; more had entered but for some reason or another did not turn up. On Saturday Kimberley Garcia, in her first ever competition on the track, competed in the U/15 girls 200m. She was drawn in lane 8, which for a first timer is one of the most difficult lanes to run in. She ran an excellent time of (29.9s). She is a first year U/15 so has plenty of time to improve. W35 Elizabeth Duffin competed in the senior women’s Javelin, an event she has won in previous years. Due to certain circumstances, she has only managed to get in one training session, so to win the Silver Medal was a great achievement even though her throw was some meters down on her best.
On Sunday, James O’Gorman in his first year as a U/17 won 2 medals. The first was a Silver in the Discus with a PB throw of 32.61m nearly 2 metres better than previously. He won a Bronze medal in the Shot 9.08m. U/23 Mason Doyle won a Silver in the Senior High Jump 1.75m, well below his previous best.
The previous weekend was the first Kent Young Athletes’ League match, held at Norman Park Bromley. In a combined team with Folkestone AC they did well winning their Division 2 match. Of the Paddock Wood athletes competing in the combined team U/13 Alex Stone won his Long Jump 3.20m, came equal first in the 75m hurdles (16.4s) and 2nd in the Shot Put 4.87m. U/13 Mollie Dew was 5th in the 70m hurdles (16.5s), was 5th in the 75m sprint (13.2s) and 4th B string in the Long Jump 2.76m. U/15 Toby West jumped a PB in his Long jump 4.20m finishing 3rd.
At Canterbury on Monday night, it was the second Kent Masters League match, for the men it was a fairly good turnout, but for the ladies only two made the match. W65 Sue James ran the W35 200m coming 3rd (41.4s) with Julie Woods in the W50 race coming 2nd (40.0s). They both competed in the Long Jump where Julie won the W35 with a PB of 2.94m, with Sue James covering the W50 to come 4th. In the W 50 Discus Julie threw 9.76 and Sue in the W60 did 9.25m. M35 Daniel Grimwood came 4th in the 1500m (5m 03.9s). Richard Bidois ran the M50 race coming 3rd (5m17.5s). Alan Newman was 2nd in the M60 race (5m 34.4s).
