| 2nd Team – silver medals | ||
Kent County officials had to swiftly change the courses for the senior age groups races following an accident in the Country Park section resulting in a broken ankle and a lengthy and difficult recovery of the injured athlete. Senior men ran a six-lap course of around 9k and the women ran four laps totalling around 6k. This was an example of just how tough cross country running is and how necessary it is to have qualified first aid and experienced officials in an emergency.
Alan Newman was first M60 but there were no age group awards as the masters have had their own championships earlier. Maria Heslop was first W45 and led PWAC to a superb silver team medal with Sarah Shepheard and Claire Day. At one point PWAC had a narrow lead but Kent AC finished strongly for gold (31 points) from PWAC (36 points) and Dulwich Runners (36 points). The tie on points was resolved in our favour due to the higher placed third scorer rule. This was an excellent team effort in the worst of conditions as the shortened circuit had been completely churned up by the earlier senior men’s race.
