Kent Cross Country League, Footscray Meadows Sidcup – Report – 11th February 2017

After an exciting four event series with testing races at Stanhill Farm, Dartford and Somerhill School, Tonbridge in October; Danson Park, Bexleyheath in November and Footscray Meadows, Sidcup today (11th February) the Paddock Wood AC senior women are the Kent Cross Country League champions – by one point from Blackheath and Bromley Harriers – with local rivals Tonbridge third.

Despite fielding a weakened team in the final match the excellent form of individual league champion Maria Heslop (3rd); overall bronze medal winner Tina Oldershaw (5th) and a seasons best for second W35 overall Elise Rendall (15th), saw the team finish second on the day to narrowly claim the top spot overall.

Maria and Tina were the first two W45 veterans overall as Maria replicated Tina’s brilliant successes of last season to claim the league title and veteran gold medals in her final season for the club before transferring to Tonbridge AC. Maria is also the oldest person ever to win a Kent League individual title at 49 years 3 months.

There was further veterans success for PWAC as Sue James (65th) was the leading W65 on the day and in the league overall, despite an incomplete season with only two races completed. Claire Day and Sarah Shepheard had also competed well in earlier races to contribute to the team’s achievements but neither were available for the decisive race.

The only men prepared to tackle the best in the County were Team Manager, Alan Newman (2 races) and Martin Taylor (1 race).

Congratulations to everyone who participated this season.
