Eastern Counties AA Combined Events Championships and Open – Peterborough, 29 September 2019
Joe Stone from Paddock Wood AC competed in the last Combined Events Open of the season as an under 13 in Peterborough.
In far from ideal weather Joe competed in a field of 13 athletes and was determined to improve his overall points score for the under 13 Pentathlon. With a good start to the day Joe jumped 4.90 meters in long jump leading the field. 2nd in the 75 Meter Hurdles with a time if 12.48s, Joe was 2nd overall behind Al-Ameen Salaam from Havering AC. Joe also came 2nd in Shot Put with a PB of 9.51m, Joint 6th in High Jump with another PB of 1.33m.
Coming up to the final event, the weather detreated and in Torrential rain Joe ran a respectable 800 Meters in 2 minutes 29.48 seconds coming 2nd and finishing 2nd overall with a combined total of 1,973 points.
With a new Pentathlon PB, Joe finishes the under 13 outdoor season ranked 2nd in the Country.
Alan Newman’s summary of the 2017 SCVAC League can be found in the document below.
The stand out performance from the second round match in the SCVAC League at Ashford on Monday (15 May) was the third place achieved in Division 2 by the Paddock Wood women’s team, AKA Julie Woods! Our women’s team now holds second overall, in a promotion position, behind Bromley Veterans and ahead of Ashford AC. Julie collected 15 points from second places in the W50 200m, long jump and discus before politely declining a suggestion that she could run all four legs of the 4x100m relay!
The men’s team continues to struggle with the rarefied atmosphere found in Division 1. Top performances were Mark Woods’ win in the M50 200m (26.7) and Alan Newman’s second in the M60 1500m (5:32.4). Mark mopped up spare points in the M50 long jump and discus before closing the 4x100m relay team that had fought back from an indiscretion with the baton.
Determined efforts were made by Trevor Simms in M35 200m and relay; Trevor Crysell (M50) in M35 200m, long jump and relay; Les Percival in M60 discus (4th) and relay and Dave Perman (M65) with the unfamiliar M35 discus, double the weight and a greater diameter than the implement his age group normally throws. However, the travails of flustered Frenchman, Yann le Roux – who arrived vestless and breathless with ten minutes to spare for his M35 1500m after becoming delayed in London – did not help his points return, despite an impressive time (4:45.7).
The next meeting is a local trip to Tonbridge School on Friday 2nd June, starting at 6:45pm.

Not in the long throws, though. What time do matches start? All matches start at 6:45pm. Detailed timetables will be circulated to selected athletes by email. Are there standards for entry. No, anyone can compete. Although competition is keen the main aim is to have fun and try new things. What Division are PWAC in?Our men are in Div 1 and our women are in Div 2. The aim is to get both teams in Div 1 and to stay there.Any rule changes for 2017?Yes. No guests allowed in hammer, discus or javelin. Four trials allowed in shot and long jump this year.
Important: Do not miss out on the opportunity to compete in this low key but well organised veterans athletics league. We have had the track to train on for a couple of seasons so lets put that training to good use and show our rivals what we are capable of.
PWAC masters athletes made a fine start to the 2016 season in the Southern Counties Veterans (Kent Division) League at Sutcliffe Park last Friday (April 29).
The men won their Division 2 match by two points and the women were a close second in Division 2 also by two points. The women should have won by a few points but a couple of gaps on the team sheet and an incident that caused Liz Duffin to miss her 400m race through absolutely no fault of her own cost us the win. However, with six fixtures this is a marathon not a sprint and we have an early opportunity to put things right in a few days at Canterbury in the next match on Monday (May 9). Would all team members please confirm their availability to the Team Manager, Alan Newman, particularly if you were unable to compete in the first match. The full results are attached.
Our first ever Southern Athletics league 16th April 2016
Paddock Wood AC athletes travelled to Hastings for the first match of the Southern Athletics league. It is the first time the club have been in this league, but with the Southern Women’s League folding the club needed new competition. Unfortunately, with the Brighton Marathon the next day and the London Marathon the following Sunday, none of the club’s distance runners were competing. So the club only had 5 men and 3 women taking part. All 3 ladies were coming back from injury so limited themselves to their events. Sharon Hawkins, who had only started training again just 3 weeks before ran the 400m (87.1s) the 800m (3m.07.1s) the 1500m (6m.16.7s) and the 3000m (12m 46.6s), all valuable points for the small team. Team Managers Elizabeth Duffin and Kate Maryon covered all the throws. Elizabeth’s first event was the Hammer where she came 2nd with 24.67m amidst a hailstorm and rain. She did the Shot Put 6.05m 3rd, the Discus 14.15m 3rd and the Javelin 22.49m 3rd A string. Kate did the B string events coming 3rd in the Shot 5.25m. 4th in the Discus 14.63m and 2nd in the Javelin 16.15m.
In the Men’s team Stuart Cawse, in his first run on the track for Paddock Wood, did well to come 4th in the 400m (62.8s) and 4th in the 800m (2m 31s). Another newcomer was David Welham M55 who competed in the Long and Triple Jumps, which he had not done for 3 years. He jumped 4.05m in the Long Jump and 8.54m in the Triple Jump. Mark Woods M50, also just covered the throws due to a nagging injury. In the Shot, he came 4th with a PB of 8.93m; he was 5th in the Discus 18.26m, 4th in the Hammer 19.88m and 5th in the Javelin 25.92m. Men’s team Manager Alan Newman ran the 5000m (19m 37.7s) finishing 5th. U/17 Aaron Rowland ran in the 1500m an event he has not done since he was an U/15 and came 5th (5m 08.7s). With more athletes competing next time, the club should get a better overall score and final position.
