SCVAC and SAL Press Report – 26th August 2016

Last Saturday saw the last of the Southern Athletics Leagues for Paddock Wood AC at Hastings. Luckily, the track was fairly sheltered but the strong winds did have an effect on some of the long throws. Once again, the club suffered from lack of athletes mainly due this time, to the holiday period. In addition, Sharon Hawkins who had been to all the matches had to pull out at the last minute due to injury. In the men’s team, there were just two athletes, both in the Masters category. Mark Woods M55 ran (13.7s) in the 100m and (28.1s) in the 200m. M60 Les Percival joined him in his first SAL meeting, running the B string 100m in exactly the same time (13.7s) and the B 200m (27.8s) a season’s best. Les also ran the 400m (65.9s). The wind did effect the runners at various points of the track due to the fact that it kept changing direction. In the ladies’ team there were just 3 athletes – 2 who had not competed in the league before. For Elise Rendall it was her first ever competition on the track, an experience she enjoyed. She ran the 800m, coming 3rd (2m.48.2s) and teamed up with Maria Heslop in the 3000m with Maria winning in (10m 45.6s) and Elise won the B string (12m 01.9s). Both did the 1500m, each coming 2nd.  In the A race Maria ran (5m 13.1s) and Elise ran (5m 49.1s) in the B race. Elizabeth Duffin covered the Hammer Javelin, Shot and Discus. The team finished last on the day but not last in Division 3E . A big thank you to Leslie Stone who was the only person who volunteered to help on Saturday.

The previous weekend was the last of the Kent Young Athletes League matches. U/13 Harvey Fordham out for the first time this season after breaking an ankle, won the B 100m (14.1s). He also won the High Jump 1.20m, and then the Long Jump 4.38m. Alex Stone won the B 75m hurdles (18.3s) and finished 2nd in the Shot 5.27m. In the U/13 girls, Grace King came 2nd in the 150m (22.2s) and 4th in the High Jump 1.15m. Maia Hyland joined Grace in the 150m coming 2nd in the B race (24.5s). Maia also competed in the Javelin 14.81m. Mollie Dew won the B string 70m H (16.00s) and came 4th in the Long Jump 3.21m. The only U/15 girl competing was Lilly Ebsworth who ran a PB in the 100m (13.4s) equalled her PB in the 200m she ran (27.6s) equalling another PB  and was 2nd in the Long Jump 4.39m, her 3rd PB of the day. The club, which is a combined team with Folkestone AC, won the Division 2 match for the season and move up to Division 1 next year.
