Last Friday saw the 3rd in the Southern Counties Masters league held at Norman park Bromley. It was a much better turn out from the club’s ladies after only 2 competed last time. W35 Kate Maryon and Elizabeth Duffin, both not 100% free from injury, decided in their terms to jog the 100m just to get a point. Despite their jog they both won their 100m easily with Kate taking the A string (15.6s) and Elizabeth the B in (17.0s) both slow times but enough to win. Julie Woods came 2nd in the W50 (18.6s) and W60 Sue James won her race (19.00s). Elizabeth went on to win the W35 Javelin 22.91m and the Shot Put 6.51m. Julie Woods won the W50 Javelin 10.68m and came 2nd in the W50 Shot 5.94m. Sue James 2nd in the W60 5.20m. Claire Day had an easy win the W35 800m (2m.34.2s) she was nearly half a lap ahead. Day joined Woods, Duffin and Maryon in the 4x100m relay they won in a time of (63.5s). The relay was run as a combined Div 1&2 race in which overall they finished 3rd. They won the match with Swanley in 2nd place and Tonbridge 3rd.
In the men’s match, it was again a tussle with Tonbridge. In the M35 100m Trevor Simms fished 3rd (13.6s )equalling his PB and in the B race Trevor Crysell ran (14.5) and was given 1st place, with the Tonbridge athlete getting the same time but given 2nd place. In the M50 100m Mark Woods had an easy win (12.9s) and the same for Les Percival in the M60 race (14.2s). .James Ridger came 2nd in the M35 800m (2.14.1s), Wayne Balmer came 3rd B (2m.16.0s). Richard Bidois finished in 3rd place (2m.37.5s). Percival, Simms, Balmer and Woods won the 4x100m (52.8s) beating Tonbridge who clocked the same time. In the field, Mark Woods won the M50 High jump 1.40m, was 2nd in the Shot 8.20m and 2nd in the Javelin 20.01m just getting one throw after his exertions in the 100m. Wayne Balmer came 2nd in the M35 Javelin 35.77m and 3nd in the Shot 7.64m. Trevor Crysel, after a quick coaching session, managed to clear the bar in the M35 High Jump 1.10m to gain valuable points. M75 Mick Duffin claimed 2nd place in the M60 shot 6.10m. The club came 2nd just 7 points behind Tonbridge – a great effort on the night.
On Sunday, it was the turn of the Younger athletes in the 2nd Youth Development league at Sutcliff Park, where Paddock Wood are in a combined team with Ashford, Thanet and Invicta. James O’Gorman, although 2 metres down on his PB, came 2nd the U/17 Discus 30.28m, he finished 4th in the Shot 9.10m. Finlay Hollyer jumped a PB in his triple Jump 9.99m and jumped 4.54m in his Long jump. Finlay also ran the 4x100m relay. Aaron Rowland won the U17 B 3000m race (10m.55.53s). In the ladies U/17 Ellie Spragg in her first ever run in competition ran (15.07s) for the 100m and (31.47) for the 200m. Emily Etheridge had only competed once before as a U/15. She ran the B 200m (31.95) and ran the 100m as a U/20 (15.28s). Both girls ran the U20 4×100 relay and then the U17 4x300m relay. Holly Preston claimed a PB in the Hammer 22.28m but was well below her best in the Discus with 11.98m. She only managed 2 throws as it clashed with her Long Jump 3.22m. Holly also ran the 4x100m relay but unfortunately the team were disqualified. The combined team came 4th on the day.
The previous Sunday it was the 2nd Southern Athletics league match, also held at Sutcliff Park with more ladies out the team did slightly better but only 4 men turned out. Nadir Raveh in his first competition since 2010 ran a PB in the 100m (11.28s) and the 200m (23.42s). Mark Woods ran the B 100m (13.37s). Mark also covered the Shot 8.25m and the Discus 19.73m. Daniel Grimwood came 4th in the 3000m (10m 53.89s). He also tried his hand at Long Jump for the first time and jumped a creditable 3.88m. Another first for Daniel was the Discus where he managed 9.96m, but still scored vital points for the club. Mason Doyle competed in the High Jump coming 2nd with 1.78m. In the ladies events, Joint team manager Elizabeth Duffin finished 3rd in the 100m Hurdles (21.31s), 3rd in the Hammer 25.11m , 3rd in the Javelin 22.92m, 4th in the Shot 6.34m and jumped a PB in the Triple jump 7.58m. Lorraine Shepheard covered the B shot 3.89m. The other manager of the team Kate Maryon jumped 1.28m in the High Jump to come 3rd. She was 4th in the Long Jump 3.82m and 3rd in the Javelin 17.21m. Holly Preston tried her hand at High Jump for the first time and managed 1.08m she came 3rd in the B Long Jump 3.09m and finished being A discus 14.11m. Sarah Shepheard ran the 5000m slightly under the weather from her Birthday celebrations the night before, but still manged to break 20minutes in a time of (19m 46.99s). She also ran the 1500m coming 3rd (5m 10.94s). Sarah came 4th in the B Hammer 18.67m. Sharon Hawkins came 3rd in the B 5000m (21m 22.60s) and was 4th in the 1500m (6m 15.24s). Maryon, Duffin, Preston and Shepheard ran the 4x100m relay in (60.9s). The team finished 5th.
